The European Biochar Certificate (EBC) was established to minimize risks related to the production and use of biochar, ensuring safety for health and the environment. Biochar has been used for centuries for soil conditioning and as a feed additive, and its agricultural and industrial applications have been expanding rapidly since 2015. Traditional biochar production methods are inefficient and environmentally harmful, so modern pyrolysis technologies are preferred. The EBC provides a standardized quality assurance for biochar, supporting sustainable production and use. In Switzerland, the EBC is mandatory for biochar used in agriculture, while it remains a voluntary standard in other European countries.
